Tips for buildersThe One Skill AI Cannot Automate: Why PH Workers Need to Build It Now
AI Is Handling the Technical Work. What’s Left?
If your job mostly involves processing information and producing documents, AI is already doing parts of it. Reports, email drafts, meeting summaries, research — these tasks are going to AI faster than most people realize.
Business columnist Francis J. Kong, writing in PhilStar today, names the skill that doesn’t automate: the ability to make people feel seen, valued, and safe.
Why Emotional Intelligence Is Now a Premium Skill
The Microsoft-LinkedIn Work Trend Index — which surveys tens of thousands of workers and managers globally — found that leaders are increasingly naming emotional intelligence as a top priority, precisely because AI is absorbing technical execution.
The logic is clear: when AI does the tasks, humans manage the energy in the room. That is not soft. That is now the core function of human workers at every level.
As Kong puts it: “Your job is to manage energy, trust and connection.”
Three Things That Do Not Automate
- Unstructured connection time. Replace one status-update meeting per week with open conversation — let the team raise what is actually on their mind. AI can run the agenda. It cannot read the mood in the room.
- Honest uncertainty. Saying “I do not know how AI will change our team this year, but I want to figure it out with all of you” builds more trust than a polished deck. Vulnerability signals psychological safety.
- Noticing the person, not just the output. Acknowledging a difficult week, a personal milestone, or a job well done is not HR theater — it is the mechanism that makes people choose to stay and try harder. AI tracks metrics. It does not notice people.
What This Means for PH Office Workers Right Now
If your company is rolling out AI tools, the pressure to automate your tasks is real. But the worker who becomes hardest to replace is not the fastest AI user — it is the most trusted one.
Trust is built in small interactions: the three-minute check-in that was not required, the public acknowledgment that cost nothing, the direct conversation that everyone else avoided. None of that fits in a prompt.
This is not a distant “future of work” idea. It is what distinguishes the workers who get promoted from the ones whose roles get consolidated — today, in offices across the country.
Honest caveat: EQ matters most when leadership models it from the top. If your company is deploying AI while freezing headcount, individual warmth will not protect you on its own. These skills compound best in environments where management actually values them — and that is worth assessing before investing heavily.
