What is “Legit Ba ’To?”

Developed by students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and the University of the Philippines (UP), “Legit Ba ’To?” is a web-based chatbot that verifies claims, links, and screenshots you send it. The name asks the one thing every Filipino asks when a viral post lands in their feed: Is this legit?

Send it a suspicious post, a screenshot, or a link — and the AI cross-checks it against recent news, fact-checking databases, and official sources. It launched on July 11 and has already processed over 100 verification requests.

Why it matters here

Fake news is not just noise in the Philippines — it is a documented crisis. A 2025 Social Weather Stations survey found 59% of Filipinos consider fake news a serious problem, and 65% admit they struggle to tell if content is false.

The chatbot was trained specifically on Filipino humor, satire, manipulated images, and AI-generated content — the exact formats misinformation uses here. This is not a generic global tool retrofitted for PH. It was built for this.
