Lead Frontend Developer
About the role
We’re looking for an experienced Lead Front-End Engineer to join our Product Team and build scalable careers websites for global clients. You’ll lead front-end delivery across multiple projects, working with Product Managers, Designers, Architects and Engineers. Alongside hands-on development, you’ll shape front-end architecture, mentor and manage Front-End Developers, and help evolve our proprietary platform and component library. You’ll work with React, Next.js and Payload CMS, balancing shared platform development with client-specific requirements. Developers have strong ownership of architecture, delivery and technical direction within small, collaborative teams.
What you'll do
- Lead front-end delivery across multiple projects, managing a small team of international developers and key projects.
- Build scalable React / Next.js (App Router) applications using TypeScript and modular SCSS.
- Own front-end architecture, implementation and technical decision-making.
- Ensure architectural consistency and engineering standards across projects.
- Configure and extend Payload CMS, including collections, globals, blocks and content models.
- Build, document and maintain reusable components using Storybook.
- Develop and maintain shared component libraries and platform features.
- Write and maintain unit and component tests where applicable.
- Integrate third-party APIs, including ATS platforms and external services.
- Lead code reviews and provide constructive technical guidance and feedback.
- Mentor and support Front-End Developers through reviews and day-to-day guidance.
- Create technical documentation and engineering guidelines.
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, Full-Stack Developers and Solutions Architects.
- Provide technical input during discovery, design reviews and solution planning.
- Manage front-end releases, deployments and versioning.
- Ensure backwards compatibility and minimise regressions.
- Implement Google Tag Manager, cookie consent solutions and related API integrations.
- Champion accessibility, performance, technical SEO and Core Web Vitals.
- Optimise bundle size, rendering performance and loading strategies.
- Manage technical debt and improve maintainability, scalability and developer experience.
- Support troubleshooting and technical investigations across projects.
- Use AI-assisted engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude and Codex to accelerate development while maintaining high engineering standards.
Requirements
- Experience leading engineers or acting as a Technical Lead on commercial software projects.
- Strong commercial experience with React, Next.js (App Router) and TypeScript.
- Experience building scalable, component-driven applications using modern React patterns.
- Experience with reusable component libraries or design systems.
- Experience with Storybook or similar component documentation tools.
- Experience with a headless CMS such as Payload, Contentful, DatoCMS, Sanity or Strapi (Payload preferred).
- Experience integrating REST APIs into React applications.
- Strong understanding of semantic HTML, responsive design and accessibility (WCAG).
- Understanding of modern rendering strategies, bundle optimisation, caching and performance optimisation.
- Experience with Git workflows, pull requests and code reviews.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable managing multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills and confidence working with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience mentoring developers and providing technical leadership.
