Pavement Condition Index (PCI) Survey & Annotation Specialist — Freelance AI Trainer Project
About the role
Meridial (powered by Invisible Technologies) is seeking pavement and civil engineering professionals worldwide to help train AI systems on infrastructure condition assessment. You’ll review roadway images and inspection records, validate AI-generated PCI distress classifications and severity ratings, and provide expert feedback on where models misidentify pavement features or misinterpret field conditions — building AI that accurately understands PCI methodology and roadway maintenance. No prior AI background required. Remote, worldwide-open, paid hourly.
What you'll do
- Review roadway images, inspection records, and AI-generated outputs to determine whether pavement distress types, severity levels, and condition assessments are accurate and consistent with PCI methodology
- Annotate and validate pavement features and distress patterns — cracking, rutting, spalling, patching, weathering — helping AI models learn to correctly identify and classify real-world conditions
- Provide written feedback explaining where models misidentify features or misinterpret severity levels; clarify how inspectors distinguish between similar distress categories in practice
- Explain how sampling units are evaluated and how field conditions influence PCI scoring and reporting, giving the model grounded insight into real-world inspection practice
Requirements
- Background in pavement engineering, civil or transportation engineering, DOT work, or highway inspection — with hands-on experience conducting or interpreting PCI surveys or pavement condition assessments
- Experience working with inspection imagery, condition reports, or roadway maintenance planning is highly valuable
- Clear written communication and ability to explain inspection reasoning and classification decisions in a structured, reproducible way
- No prior AI or technical background required — training and project guidelines will be provided
