91% of Philippine Businesses Are Bullish on AI — So Why Are Most Still Stuck in Pilot Mode?

Nine out of ten Philippine businesses are sold on AI

According to Alibaba Cloud's AI Business Application Readiness and Accessibility Survey (conducted with NielsenIQ), 91% of Philippine enterprises hold a positive view of AI — and 95% plan to increase their AI product investments this year.

That number sounds almost unanimous. But bullish and deployed are two very different things.

What is actually driving the interest

Philippine businesses are chasing AI for these top reasons:

• Innovation and new opportunities — 68%
• Cost savings and operational efficiency — 54%
• Better customer experience — 51%
• Competitive advantage — 50%
• Revenue growth potential — 39%

Those are the right reasons. Saving time and money while growing sales is exactly the ROI a bootstrapped Philippine business needs before making a switch.

The two walls still blocking adoption

Despite the optimism, two barriers keep showing up: data privacy and security concerns (flagged by 51% of respondents) and high implementation costs (41%). Both are legitimate — not just excuses.

For a 5-person logistics company or an online seller running on Shopee and GCash, a tool that costs P10,000 a month plus setup fees is not a quick experiment. And feeding customer data into an offshore AI system raises real questions about PDPA compliance and what happens to that data.

What the survey does not tell you — but should

The 57% of Philippine firms already actively exploring or implementing AI? Most started with the free tier of one tool, one task, one week at a time. Here is the lean way to start without the enterprise price tag:

• Start with free tools — ChatGPT Free, Claude.ai Free, and Gemini all have usable no-cost plans. Run one real work task through them before committing to anything paid.
• Keep sensitive data out of AI chats — Customer names, IDs, and payment details should never be pasted into a public AI tool. Treat it like a public search bar. Use anonymized versions of your data for testing.
• Pick one bottleneck — Write product descriptions, answer FAQs, or make quotations faster. Prove the ROI on one use case before adding more.

The 91% who are bullish all started somewhere. The gap between optimistic and actually using AI is usually just a first step.
